Colorado Association of Montessori Schools

The Colorado Association of Montessori Schools (COAMS) is dedicated to increasing awareness, providing public advocacy, and rendering administrative support and guidance in furtherance of authentic Montessori educational offerings within the state.

The Colorado Association of Montessori Schools is a professional trade organization devoted to the furtherance of Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy of education. Our membership includes private, not-for-profit, and public Montessori schools, which meet our high standards for membership.

About Our Members

From the beginning, the name "Montessori" has been in the public domain in the United States. As a consequence, any school or program can claim to follow the Montessori method without regulations or restrictions. Having untrained teachers professing to teach Montessori risks giving a negative impression to the public and the educational world, and it makes it difficult for a parent to be sure of the quality of the school. The Colorado Association of Montessori Schools requires member schools to demonstrate adherence to the Montessori philosophy and requires the presence of highly qualified, Montessori trained, teaching staff in every classroom. As a result, when comparing programs, parents may wish to verify a school’s membership in the Colorado Association of Montessori Schools as a method of determining whether the school's program actually uses Montessori methods.

"An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking, it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live."
- Maria Montessori
